• Barfi! What I loved, hated and didn’t understand about it

Here’s my list of things that I loved, hated and didn’t understand about Barfii!. Caveat lector — there may be spoilers ahead so if you haven’t watched the movie then probably its good idea to stop here.

    Barfi!

What I loved about it —

    1. Ranbir Kapoor, he is simply brilliant. His antics to get Illeana D’Cruz to love him are heart warming. And when he realizes that they are not meant to be with each other his anger and sadness is palpable.

  • Unknown species of moth… Have you seen it somewhere else? [Updated]

Some time back I saw a moth (at first I thought it was a butterfly) sitting at my door and snapped a picture of it. Nothing special, but it had huge & gorgeous eye spots on itself. This is what it looked like —

I posted it on my Tumblr blog, and it got reblogged by diglettsinthesky identifying it as an unknown species which was photographed in Central America along with a photograph. You can also find the photograph on National Geographic Stock with picture ID 1246681. While I am no entomologist, but the picture on National Geographic does look quite similar to the one I snapped. Have you seen this kind of moth somewhere else?

Update 18 Oct 2012: Ram (see comments below) identified the moth as Walker’s Owl Moth. For a moment there I thought I had discovered an unknown species and would have my picture on NatGeo Magazine!

Image credits: The picture of moth belongs to me and is licensed same as this blog.

  • How can we win more medals at Olympics?

    India at London Olympics 2012

London Olympics 2012 have ended and India has given their best performance by far, in terms medal tally. Though there was no gold this time around but Sushil Kumar became the first Indian to bag two medals at Olympics, back to back. CHEERS! But for a country with 1+ billion population its still minuscule. So how can we increase our medal tally? Here are some of my suggestions –

    1. Introduce cricket in Olympics. This won’t guarantee a medal but it sure would give hope lot of Indians (including me). The reason it won’t guarantee medal for us is that, in recent times, Team India’s track record outside Asia has been not so good, to say the least.

  • First Day, First Job

    First day on job

Beep… Beep… Beep…… Beep… Beep… Beep…… Trying to find snooze button on the alarm clock, Navin (that’s not me, notice the spelling) woke up at 05:30 AM. With drowsy eyes he went straight to the bathroom, barely avoiding the dining chair, to answer nature’s call. After completing all his regular activities like brushing his teeth, cleaning goop from his eyes and mucus from nose it suddenly dawned to him. This is my first day at my first job. There was a sudden surge of emotions and feelings within him like… “I need to go to bathroom again!”

    –––––

He put on his Peter England shirt and Max trousers which he had bought yesterday at the mall.

  • Why did I see The Dark Knight Rises… again!

I am a big fan of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, if you are not then probably you should have a look at Batman & Robin. But is that a reason enough for you to see the movie again. Well read on for my reasons, wait… caveat lector. If you haven’t watched the movie then there are some spoilers ahead. Yes, now you can go ahead –

    The Dark Knight Rises

    1. This time, I wasn’t paying for the tickets!

    2. Previously I saw the movie in puny 70mm format. But this time, I saw it in gargantuan IMAX screen which was almost four storeys tall.

  • My favorite (free) photo editing apps for android

If your phone is blessed with a great camera like the ones found in Samsung Galaxy S2/3 or HTC One S/X then you need to have a photo editing app installed to make the most of those photos. But before I start with my list I will clear it out that Instagram does not make it. Why? Because it is more of a photo-sharing app than a photo editing app. So here it goes –

    Pixlr-o-matic

This app comes from Autodesk (creators of AutoCAD) and probably has most number of filters available than any other photo editing app available in Google Play. When you first download the app it would have only a small subset of filters (effects, overlay and border), but then afterwards you add more depending on your preferences – and there are tons of them.

  • The “not so” Amazing Spiderman

Reasons why The Amazing Spiderman is “not so” amazing:

    1. I went to this movie thinking that it would be different from the one directed by Sam Raimi, thats what the promo said – “The untold story”. Spoiler alert: The story has already been told.

  • If Rajinikanth was a software engineer…

I know that there is no shortage of Rajinikanth jokes, but I couldn’t stop myself after reading this post. So here it goes.

If Rajinikanth was a software engineer…

    1. Compilers don’t warn Rajinikanth. Rajinikanth warns compilers.

    2. Rajinikanth writes directly in binary. He then writes the source code as a documentation for other developers.

    3. Rajinikanth can derive private key by just looking at the public key.
